Research and innovation team celebrates 10,000 participants milestone

Date added: 07 January 2025

The research and innovation team at Kent and Medway NHS Trust (KMPT) recently celebrated a significant achievement, enabling 10,000 participants to be involved in research. This milestone represents over 12 years of growth, innovation and expanding research capabilities across various clinical areas.

The team has reflected on the milestone and celebrated key achievements beyond the achievement of the participation of service users, carers and staff in research. Since 2009 the team has focused on the development and expansion of their clinical research delivery team, which is made up of a team of Accredited Clinical Research Practitioners (CRP’s) and a Clinical Research Nurse. This team work alongside KMPT’s passionate and dedicated clinical teams, together contributing to achieving this milestone in service user involvement. The development of the team and of clinical staff has played a crucial role in advancing the trusts capability to deliver clinical trials, including therapeutic interventions and has supported the integration of research into everyday practice.

Key achievements celebrated:
Growth and expansion: From just three staff members to a thriving department of 25, leading on and delivering innovative projects.
Commercial drug trials: Hosting international commercial drug trials has expanded our opportunities for research involvement for our service users whilst also generating income to invest in further research development.
Implementation of research evidence: The team’s research has directly led to the rollout of open dialogue, an innovative approach to mental health care.
KMPT led research: Recruitment to internally led studies has created a platform for continued research and development.
Specialised research in dementia and psychosis: The team is excitingly expanding its clinical research skills to deliver imaging research in dementia and psychosis, with exciting developments like the ultra Low field MRI scanner. Led by both Professor Sukhi Shergill and Dr. Jo Rodda, this will be used for research into improving access to dementia assessment in Kent and Medway.

Afifa Qazi, Chief Medical Officer, congratulated the team on their impressive achievements and encouraged them to continue driving positive change through their work. Over the years, they have not only expanded opportunities for internal staff but also built strong partnerships with universities, pharmaceutical companies, NHS trusts, and community organisations.

As they await the outcome of the NIHR Capital Funding Call, which could enhance their facilities and research capabilities, the team remains committed to improving patient care through evidence-based research and innovation.

Celebrations will continue over the coming months as the team intends to thank and celebrate with those who have contributed and supported them to reach this significant milestone.
