Our Rough Sleeper Team is breaking down barriers to make mental health care more accessible
Date added: 10 January 2025
We want to highlight the important work of our Rough Sleeper Team, which is effectively reaching and engaging with more people who are either experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. It is estimated that between 40% and 80% of those who sleep rough struggle with mental health issues, making it extremely difficult for them to find and maintain stable housing.
Thanks to the nationwide Rough Sleeping Initiative, launched in 2022, our Rough Sleeper Team supports local authorities in delivering tailored services designed to help peoples achieve a secure and safe life away from the streets.
John Lavelle, Service Director for West Kent, emphasised: "Our success reflects the dedication of our specialists, including psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses, who work alongside Mental Health Together and other secondary mental health care services. We conduct assessments directly on the streets, engaging with peoples where they are. To provide effective help, we must be flexible and think creatively. Building trust takes time, but our team has earned a positive reputation within the vulnerable communities we assist, largely through word-of-mouth from those we care for, which makes it easier to reach others in need."
Our Rough Sleeper Team understands the unique challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness and adopts a compassionate approach aimed at fostering engagement and trust within this vulnerable community. Tragically, the average life expectancy for those living on the streets is only 43 years, highlighting the importance of acting with kindness and compassion. Each person our team supports faces their own battles, which may include issues such as substance abuse, violence, and exploitation, emphasising the urgent need for understanding and support.
Paul, who the Rough Sleeper Team supports, shares his experience: "Only in December, I was in a very bad place, and I know I would be dead if it weren't for Nic and Claire. They have helped me so much; they are good people. They always do what they say they are going to do, too. With their help and support, Cally and I moved into supported accommodation just before Christmas. I know I still have a long way to go, but I now look forward to tomorrow because I know I have people who care about me. I can't thank Claire and Nic enough." Paul's story is just one of many that highlight the life-changing impact of our team's work.
It is essential to recognise that people experiencing homelessness in our communities are often among the most disadvantaged, marginalised, and traumatised populations. Rough sleeping is not a lifestyle choice. The introduction of our Rough Sleeping Team has resulted in significant improvements.
John concludes: "This success is something we can all be proud of and provides confidence in the effectiveness and impact of our services."
