Oils well that ends well as we become one of the first trusts in Kent to have a sustainable fuelled on-site generator!
Date added: 18 April 2024
This month we took another big step towards our Net Zero goals, by swapping the diesel oil we use in our generator, for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
This project lead by the KMPT Sustainability team, will see our new HVO fuelled generator pump out approximately 75% less carbon than it did before –– thereby improving the air on site. It’s also highly efficient and sustainable; lasting up to 10 years and remaining uncontaminated.
Located on our main Maidstone site, our backup generator provides temporary power in the event of an outage to the site. The process of switching from using diesel fuel to HVO fuel was carried out by fuel experts SDM Fuel Solutions; a company we have partnered with to trial the new cleaner, renewable and sustainable fuel in our generator.
Sharing her excitement at the Trust wide changes that KMPT is making, Energy and Environment Manager Vicky Cooper said:
“I am very proud to see that KMPT are committed to reducing our carbon footprint by taking part in this trial and are open to exploring new opportunities to find innovative, low impact, cost-effective solutions to lower emissions.
“It was really simple to switch from diesel to a greener fuel too. No changing of filters or pumps, no alternations needed to the generator and no mess. It was a surprisingly quiet process, which caused zero impact to our service users – and it was all completed within just over an hour.
“I think we’re getting a preview of what sustainability looks like for KMPT in the future – and how simple actions can make a massive difference.”
