Mental health information
One in four adults will be affected by mental ill health in their lifetime and one in 10 young people will be affected in theirs. Statistically, this means you or someone you know will experience a mental health condition at some point in life.
While mental health conditions are widespread, severe cases are generally concentrated among a relatively small proportion of people and some of these will experience more than one condition at a time.
Most people feel uncomfortable talking about their mental health condition and this isn't surprising, considering nine out of 10 people affected by mental ill health still experience stigma and discrimination.
The most commonly diagnosed mental health conditions in the UK are:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Personality disorders
- Eating disorders
